Assembly facilities pose unique fire protection challenges involving
these key considerations:
Multiple Objectives. Designing an arena, stadium, entertainment
venue or convention center poses several challenges to the design
team. One, the facility must accommodate both the functional and
fire/security safety needs of large groups of people, all under
one roof. Two, many of these facilities are publicly funded and
therefore, under close scrutiny by the press and public. Three,
most building codes do not adequately address the special needs
of large assembly occupancies.

Code Equivalencies. To develop approaches that address common problems,
the fire protection project team must work closely with the Authorities
Having Jurisdiction (AHJ). Often, code equivalencies are necessary
to increase seating capacity, modify required aisle widths, increase
exit travel distances and evaluate sprinkler densities and design
parameters.
Negotiation. The purpose of negotiating with code officials
is to provide for the special fire and security safety considerations
of a large assembly facility without compromising the facility's
functional needs.
